One in four individuals having experienced mental illness in their lifetime, coupled with societal stigma, suicide rates are on the rise for the first time since 1990. Recently selected as the 2011 public service beneficiary, Mental Health America of Greenville County is teaming with the American Advertising Federation of Greenville (AAF Greenville) to raise awareness for mental illness within the Upstate community.
“Good mental health is fundamental to the well being of every person,” said Jennifer Piver, interim executive director, Mental Health America of Greenville County. “With assistance from AAF Greenville, we look forward to fighting the stigma of mental illness by arming Greenville with a new perspective. This collaboration will help our community recognize the value in mental wellness, garner a new respect and understanding of mental illness and to not be afraid to seek help. Inevitably the result of our collaboration will help save lives.” Ninety percent of all mental illness is treatable, but less than one-third of those affected receive help. As a result of the stigma associated with mental illness, more than 530 South Carolinians commit suicide annually. To educate the community about the gravity and preventability of suicide, AAF Greenville and Mental Health America of Greenville County plan on developing a campaign targeting suicide prevention, intervention and aftercare in early 2011.
AAF Greenville will also assist Mental Health America of Greenville County with fundraising, solicitation of volunteers and increasing the community’s use of free services such as crisis lines and online screenings. the bounce agency, an AAF Greenville corporate member, will take the creative lead on the project.
Founded in 1955, Mental Health America of Greenville County promotes positive mental health to all persons in the Greenville community through advocacy, education and service.
AAF Greenville is a local market affiliate of the American Advertising Federation that encourages professional development through seminars, award presentations, networking and industry leader recognition.
